Ayabonga “Barbeey” Mhlongo
My name is Ayabonga “Barbeey” Mhlongo (18) and I am from a place called Inanda Glebe in Durban but I was raised in Richards Bay. I completed my grade 12 in 2017 at Richards Bay Christian School.
I decided to apply for the Bremen-Durban Ocean Champions programme because I have always taken an interest in everything concerning the marine environment, particularly how people interact with it and the effects that climate change has on it. In understand that water is the foundation of human life, I figured that this was a great opportunity to be able to be part of a smart and forward thinking group of individuals which are driven to make a difference in the universe.
What I would like to acquire from this learnership is more knowledge and information about the marine environment and how to conserve it. This knowledge will help me uplift other people, especially my community so it can be able to sustain us and the future generations to come. This is just the beginning of great things! I hope to help come up with innovative ideas that will better the earth and overall, have a positive impact on the world as well as leave a positive footprint behind.
